Postal offences

Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 – Division 471 Postal offences, it's an offence to intentionally damage or tamper with mail-receptacles (post-boxes), articles (e.g. mail) or postal messages.

Postal offences cover a wide range of Commonwealth offences, including:

  • theft or tampering of mail‑receptacles, articles or postal messages
  • damaging or destroying mail‑receptacles, articles or postal messages
  • dishonestly obtaining delivery of articles
  • using a postal or similar service to make a threat, menace, harass or cause offence
  • causing a dangerous article to be carried by a postal or similar service.
