South Australia man charged with child exploitation offence

This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and South Australia Police.

A 42-year-old man from the Lower Eyre Peninsular of South Australia has been charged with a child exploitation offence.  He was arrested by detectives from the South Australia Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (SA-JACET), which comprises of members from the Australian Federal Police and South Australia Police Force.

The man was arrested today (7 June 2019) and charged with one count of dissemination of child exploitation material contrary to Section 63(B)of the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935 (SA); and one count of failing to comply with his reporting obligations.

The man was granted police bail and will appear in the Port Lincoln Magistrates Court on 17 July 2019.

Members of the public who have any information about people involved in child sexual exploitation are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Note to media

CHILD EXPLOITATION IMAGES, NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase “child pornography” benefits child sex abusers because it:

  • indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and
  • conjures images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not “pornography”.
