Eritrea-born man charged with alleged visa breaches
An Eritrea-born man is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court tonight (Thursday 13 June, 2024) charged with allegedly failing to comply with his visa-mandated curfew conditions and failing to maintain his electronic monitoring device.
The AFP charged the man, 36, today, after locating him in Footscray.
It will be alleged the man breached the conditions of his Commonwealth visa between 22 April and 27 May 2024, by failing to observe his residential curfew obligations and failing to maintain his electronic monitoring device.
The man has been charged with:
- One count of failing to comply with a curfew condition, contrary to section 76C(1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).
- Four counts of failing to ensure that a monitoring device remains in good working order, contrary to 76D(3) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).
Each offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $93,900 fine.
