53-year-old man charged with child exploitation offences at Sydney International Airport

This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Border Force.

A 53-year-old Armadale (WA) man is expected to appear before Sydney's Central Local Court today charged with child exploitation offences, after his arrest at Sydney International Airport last night (Wednesday, 15 May 2019).

The Australian Border Force (ABF) received information on the man which warranted further investigation. Following an examination of the traveller and his belongings, the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The AFP interviewed the man and reviewed his electronic devices, which allegedly contained child exploitation material.

The man was subsequently charged with:

  • Using a Carriage Service For Child Pornography Material contrary to section 474.19 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (CTH)
  • Production, Dissemination or Possession of Child Abuse Material contrary to section 91H(2) of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW)

THIS IS CHILD EXPLOITATION, NOT 'CHILD PORNOGRAPHY'

Use of the phrase 'child pornography' actually benefits child sex abusers because:

  • it indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and
  • it conjures up images of children posing in 'provocative' positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not pornography.
