Our work in South America and the Caribbean

Our work

The AFP has had a permanent presence in Colombia since 2000. Our office is responsible for South America and the majority of the Caribbean (38 countries in total).

Colombia is a key Australian partner in the fight against international serious and organised crime. We work with:

  • the Colombian National Police
  • the Office of the Colombian Attorney-General
  • other Colombian forces with law enforcement responsibilities.

We also work closely with law enforcement agencies across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand and the Netherlands, sharing assets, capabilities and resources to support our priorities.

Together, we focus on disrupting criminal syndicates operating offshore to seize illicit drugs at the earliest opportunity. This reduces the illicit drug supply to Australia and harm to Australians. It also disrupts the flow of money from drugs sales into the region, which fuels ongoing drug production and harm. Other key crime types we are combatting in this region are child exploitation and terrorism.
