Policing in the ACT
The AFP is responsible for policing in Canberra, Australia’s national capital, and the surrounding Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The AFP provides this service to the people of the ACT through its community policing arm, ACT Policing.
ACT Policing’s mission is to keep the peace and preserve public safety within the ACT. We strive to deliver a professional and effective service to the people of Canberra in all that we do.
ACT Policing offers a wide range of policing services to Canberrans, ranging from general policing and law enforcement services including investigations (through the Territory Investigations Group), Crime and Safety Management, Crime Prevention and Traffic Operations to more specialist roles such as intelligence gathering, forensics, search and rescue, and emergency management.
The Chief Police Officer of the ACT is Michael Phelan. Commander Leanne Close is Deputy Chief Police Officer (Response), and Commander Kevin Zuccato is Deputy Chief Police Officer (Investigation and Support). Mr Paul Williams is the Director of Corporate Services.

Women's pilates program

The AFP along with the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has got together to host a women only sports event on Wenesdays. Providing classes in Pilates, the sessions are free-of-charge. The program runs from 15 October - 17 December 2008.

ACT Policing today announced a new way for Canberrans to report crime in their community.
ACT Region Crime Stoppers, in partnership with ACT Policing and other community sponsors, will be adding an on-line capability to report crime via the new ACT Crime Stoppers website: www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Snow Safe 2008 targets speeding and fatigue

ACT Policing and NSW Police have launched Snow Safe 2008, targeting speeding and driver fatigue to and from the NSW snowfields. This launch coincides with the upcoming Queen’s Birthday long weekend and subsequent double demerit period.
Officers from both jurisdictions gathered today at the ACT/NSW border near Hume to launch the campaign.

Police focus on responsible drinking campaign: “Where are you staying tonight?”

ACT Policing is continuing its marketing to encourage the responsible consumption of alcohol in Canberra's entertainment districts of Civic, Kingston and Manuka.
The "Where are you staying tonight?" campaign features a realistic 15-second television advertisement filmed outside a city nightclub and shows police attending an incident, with an unidentified male being taken into custody.
The ad will be shown during NRL and AFL football games and supporting shows, such as The Footy Show, focussing on getting the message of responsible alcohol consumption most specifically to males in the 18-25 year-old age group.
