South Australian man arrested for child exploitation offences

This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and South Australia Police

Detectives from the South Australia Police Special Crimes Investigation Branch and the Australian Federal Police arrested a 52-year-old man from the northern suburbs overnight as part of the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET).

The man has been charged with one count of possessing child exploitation material and using a carrier service to access child pornography material (Commonwealth).

It will be alleged the children depicted in the child exploitation material included children under the age of 14 years, making the charges aggravated.

The man was granted bail and will be appearing at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 1 April 2016.

The JACET is a state based model in which the AFP and their counterparts work together to combat the sexual exploitation of children online.

Members of the public who have any information about people involved in child exploitation material are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NOTE FOR MEDIA: CHILD EXPLOITATION IMAGES, NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase ‘child pornography’ actually benefits child sex abusers:

  • It indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser.
  • It conjures up images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not pornography.
