Northern Territory man charged with child exploitation offences

Police have charged a 61-year-old male for allegedly possessing and accessing child exploitation material.

The Northern Territory Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET), comprised of Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Northern Territory Police officers, investigates offences relating to child exploitation.

Yesterday, a warrant was executed at the man’s Howard Springs residence, where numerous electronic devices, including a laptop were seized.

Upon a forensic examination of the laptop a number of child exploitation images were located. The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of child abuse material -  Section 25B Criminal Code (NT)
  • Use of a carriage service to access child pornography material-  Section 474.19 Criminal Code (Cth)

He will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court today.

NOTE FOR MEDIA: CHILD EXPLOITATION IMAGES, NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase ‘child pornography’ actually benefits child sex abusers:

  • It indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser.
  • It conjures up images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not pornography.
