Man charged after cocaine secreted in liquid seized

A 31-year-old Brazilian national was due to face court today (30 March) after attempting to import cocaine through Sydney Airport.
The man was stopped by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers after arriving in Sydney yesterday (29 March) on a flight from London. Officers conducted an examination of the man’s bags, during which three bottles of alcohol, totalling about 3.4 litres, were located.
The bottles were x-rayed and ABF officers noted inconsistencies. The contents of the bottles were presumptively tested, returning a positive result for cocaine.
Further testing will be done to determine the exact weight and purity of the drugs seized.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) who arrested and charged the man with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely cocaine, as per section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
This offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
The man was expected to face Central Local Court.
