Harmful drugs stopped from entering remote indigenous community
A Bees Creek man will appear before Darwin Magistrates Court today for attempting to supply cannabis with an estimated street value of more than $120,000 and alcohol to a remote indigenous community in the Northern Territory.
The 30-year-old was stopped at Darwin Airport yesterday (Tuesday 26 January, 2016) before boarding a flight to a remote aboriginal community in Arnhem Land.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers were called to the airport to search his luggage, where it will be alleged approximately 1.2 kilograms of cannabis and 2.5 litres of alcohol were discovered within the man’s checked baggage.
The man was taken to the Northern Territory watch house and charged with:
- Possessing a Schedule 2 dangerous drug (commercial quantity of cannabis) – Section 9.2(d) Misuse of Drugs Act (NT)
- Supplying a Schedule 2 dangerous drug to a remote community – Section 5.2(a) Misuse of Drugs Act (NT)
- Taking alcohol into a restricted community – Liquor Act (NT).
He is scheduled to appear before Darwin Magistrates Court today (Wednesday 27 January, 2016).
The arrest comes as part of a wider police operation, targeting the supply of illicit and dangerous substances to remote areas of the Northern Territory.
Investigations into this matter are continuing and further arrests have not been ruled out.
