Man arrested in Darwin on immigration offences

A 63-year-old British man has been arrested in Darwin for people smuggling offences. It is alleged that the man facilitated the use by a Sri Lankan national of his boarding pass to attempt unlawful entry into Australia on Monday 29 June 2009.

It is further alleged the British man facilitated the entry into Australia of two Sri Lankan nationals who arrived in Australia on 29 June 2009 using the boarding passes of other passengers.

The man arrived in Australia on 29 June 2009 on a flight from Singapore and was arrested in relation to alleged people smuggling offences on arrival.

He has been charged with three offences contrary to section 233 of the Migration Act 1958

The maximum penalty for these offences is 10 years imprisonment.

He will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court today.
