Drugs in suitcase at Sydney Airport

A 31-year-old Canadian woman will face Sydney Central Local Court today charged with importing approximately 2 kilograms of Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice) into Australia.

Customs and Border Protection officers at Sydney International Airport stopped the woman and searched her baggage after she arrived on a flight from Canada yesterday (Sunday, 15 March) afternoon.

An x-ray of the woman’s suitcase revealed an image consistent with a possible drug concealment. Further investigation found a quantity of granules inside the lining of the suitcase.

Presumptive testing of the granules indicated a positive result for methamphetamine.

Further forensic testing will confirm the drug, its exact weight and purity.

The woman was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The AFP charged the woman this morning with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug, contrary to section 307.2(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The AFP will allege in court that the woman was in possession of approximately 2 kilograms of methamphetamine.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
