Police charge five with assault in Wanniassa

ACT Policing has arrested three men and two women after an assault on a 35-year-old man in Wanniassa on Saturday (January 3).

About 10.30pm police attended the Malahide Gardens residential complex in response to a serious and ongoing assault. The victim, a resident of the complex, had been allegedly kicked and punched repeatedly by the group of five within the open courtyard area of the complex. It is also alleged while the victim was lying beaten on the ground the group continued to kick, punch and stomp on the male’s head and upper body, and that the two women had also bitten the man a number of times.

Prior to police attending, it is also alleged one of the men threw a shopping trolley on to the victim. The assault concluded with the arrival of police. The victim is being treated at Canberra Hospital for bruising and lacerations to his head and upper body, as well as a suspected broken jaw.

The alleged offenders were arrested and conveyed to the Regional Watch House. Two men aged 20, one man aged 22 and two women aged 18 were each charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The alleged offenders will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Monday, January 5).
